Difference Between Target Dates and Milestones

A target date is an appointment for which Tasks and Journal Entries can be planned. Both milestones and Meetings can be defined as target dates. In turn, additional target dates can be assigned to a parent target date. However, this is only possible with milestones, not with meetings. The following sections describe the creation and use of milestones in particular. For more information on task planning, see the following article: Task planning.

Creating Milestones

Milestones mark important dates in the course of a project and can be assigned to tasks to improve organization and planning. Once a task is scheduled to a milestone, the person responsible can no longer change its due date. For more information on assigning and planning tasks, see the following article: Creating Tasks. If a Scheduling with MS Project is available, milestones are automatically imported into the task planning. If you hover over a week, a "+" icon appears, which you can use to create a milestone. You can also do this using the "Create" option.

When creating a milestone, you can assign a title and select categories to classify it by topic. This allows you to search for milestones later in a targeted manner Search and filter. A description can be added under "Details." The due date is set under "Planning." Additionally, a parent target date can be selected. This makes the new milestone subordinate to the parent target date; in other words, the subordinate milestone must be completed in order to meet the parent target date. Using the “Use as Parent Target Date” option, the new milestone itself can be defined as a parent target date for other milestones or tasks.
