Use of file naming conventions

File naming conventions are currently still being introduced on buildagil and are only available in Preview version. As this is a development status, there may still be changes until the general release.

File naming conventions allow files in the project to be named consistently and comprehensibly. The structured naming supports the automatic review of file names. Deviations are recognized and marked by the system. This reduces manual corrections and creates a reliable basis for further processing. The file naming conventions can be defined by a project admin in the project settings. Further information can be found in the following article: Project settings.

If a file naming convention has been applied to a folder, the files can assume the following states:

The states of files after applying the convention are visible for All members of a team, which have Write access to the folder where the file is located. Files can be uploaded without restrictions.

  • Invalid: The file name does not correspond to the defined conventions
  • Obsolete: Changes have been made to the convention or the file name. However, the automatic review has not yet been completed
  • No status: The file name is valid or no convention has been applied

If changes have been made to the convention or the file name, these are processed overnight and are visible the following day. Further information can be found in the following article: Configuring file naming conventions.

The filter can be used to filter the files with the states accordingly. You can find more information about the filter in the following article: Search & filter.

Rename an invalid file name

If a file name has been marked as invalid, it can be renamed according to the convention using the file options.

This opens a dialog box in which invalid fields are marked in red.

The question mark symbol is used to display information on the respective convention module to see how the designation should be structured correctly.

Once all the requirements have been met, the file can be renamed.

The file is then given a new name with the specified separators and is no longer marked as invalid.

In the advanced options of the rename function, the file can also be renamed without applying the convention. The name remains marked as invalid if the new name does not correspond to the convention. The name can also be validated manually. This is helpful if an outdated file name is to be checked immediately and you do not want to wait for the nightly processing.
