Configuring file naming conventions

The file naming conventions can be defined by a project admin in the project settings. Further information can be found in the following article: Project settings.

Configuring file naming conventions

File naming conventions can be used to create defined rules for naming files in the project. This ensures a clear structure and enables automatic review for naming conformity. This article explains how conventions can be created and configured. A file naming convention consists of several convention elements. The conventions themselves can be named, copied or deleted. These individual elements within a convention can be moved, removed or copied. With the exception of the "Separator / Text" field, all elements can also be freely named. The elements can be collapsed and expanded for a better overview.

New convention elements can be added via "Element".

selection list

The selection list can be used to define various valid values in the file name. If several values are defined, the system checks whether one of the defined values has been used.

Separator / Text

A separator or text can be freely defined here. This field is then static text, whereby the text/character defined here must be used one-to-one.

Text input

Text input can be used to define free text of fixed and variable length, numbers of fixed and variable length and any field.

For free text and numbers with a fixed length, an exact number of characters up to 16 characters can be defined.

For free text and numbers with variable length, the number of characters can be set from a minimum number to a maximum number between 0 and 50 characters.

With "Any", a user can freely choose the name without restrictions.

Regular expression

This allows complex requirements to be mapped that cannot be implemented with the standard functions. This role is intended for people with the appropriate knowledge of Regex.

File types

Here you can select from a list of file types to which the convention should be applied. If the file type is not in the list, you can define it yourself in the text field. If no file type is defined, the file convention applies to all files in the selected folder.

Folder

The folders to which the convention is to be applied can be selected for the folders. If a folder is selected, the convention is applied to all subfolders by default. If no folder is selected, the convention is not applied.

As soon as a file naming convention is created or changed, the affected files are marked as "obsolete" and checked again overnight. A corresponding information message appears after saving the settings.
