# Measuring and Cutting in the Model

* [Measurements in the Model](#3-measurements-in-the-model)
* [Creating Cross-Sections](#3-creating-cross-sections)

### Measurements in the Model
Various measurement functions are available for analyzing geometries and reviewing distances in the model. These allow for precise evaluation directly in the model view. Measurements can be performed using the functions [Distance Measurement](#3-distance-measurement), [Dimensional Measurement](#3-distance-measurement), [Distance measurement (ortho.](#3-distance-measurement-orthophoto)), [Distance Measurement (horizontal/vertical)](#3-distance-measurement-horizontalvertical) and [Point Measurement](#3-point-measurement). There is also a [Enlargement](#3-enlargement) tool that allows for more precise selection of corners and edges. The results can be saved in [Views](/en/article/overview-of-models-bim-29wi0x/) and [BCF / Model Tasks](/en/article/creating-and-viewing-bcf-and-model-tasks-c6gbjn/). When the "Snap" feature is enabled, corners and edges are automatically detected. The Snap feature can be temporarily disabled by holding down the "CTRL" key.

| Measurement functions are available for models in the IFC, PLY, STL, and GLB formats. For point clouds, distance measurement and point measurement are possible. Dimensional measurement, orthogonal distance measurement, and horizontal/vertical distance measurement are not available, as these require a contiguous surface with a defined orientation, which is not present in point clouds.

### Distance Measurement
Measures the distance between two points. With the snap-to function enabled, operation is simplified.

### Dimensional Measurement
Calculates the dimensions of an area.

### Distance Measurement (orthophoto)
Measures the distance at a right angle from one surface to the next.

### Distance Measurement (horizontal/vertical)
Calculates the distance horizontally or vertically, regardless of the surface's orientation.

### Point Measurement
Displays the coordinates of a single point.

Measurement lines can be deleted using "Remove Measurements."

### Enlargement
You can activate the zoom using a slider or by holding down the "ALT" key.

### Creating Cross-Sections
To improve visibility and enable targeted analysis of interior areas, sections can be created in the model. These allow for a focused view of specific areas of the model. A section can be created using the "Section" function and then selecting the desired area in the model. The orientation is automatically aligned along the selected surface. To save a view with a cut, you can use a [Model View](/en/article/overview-of-models-bim-29wi0x/).

| For point clouds, a cut can only be defined if they are loaded in a [Model Lineup](/en/article/model-assemblies-editing-186ypv5/) file that also contains at least one other model of a different type (e.g., IFC, PLY, STL, GLB). The intersection point requires a face or edge to snap to, which point clouds do not provide. If only point clouds are loaded, the intersection role is not available.

The following roles are available for editing cuts:
1. Cross-section (move the arrows to reposition the cross-section)
2. Add a new cut
3. Hide Cuts (Hides the cut surfaces)
4. Disable cuts
5. Remove the cuts
6. Lock the cut into place along the axis
7. Enable zoom
8. Coloring the cut lines

Cuts can also be placed along an edge, line, or axis. To do this, the "Snap" function must be enabled.
